Following the liquidation of Lincoln-based Bulgin Power Source at the end of 2002, a group of its former employees have set up a new power supply manufacturing company.

Following the liquidation of Lincoln-based Bulgin Power Source at the end of 2002, a group of its former employees have set up a new power supply manufacturing company Headed up by Grant Ashley as Technical and Sales Director and Tim McCann as Operations Director, VxI Power recently moved into 950m2 premises in Station Road, Lincoln, where the 14-strong workforce is engaged in the design and manufacture of intelligent, battery-backed power supplies and custom PSUs for low- to medium-power applications

As well as acquiring the intellectual property rights and most of the stock and assets of Bulgin Power Source, VxI Power has also recruited key team leaders made redundant by Bulgin.

"With the new factory up and running", commented Grant Ashley, "everything is now in place for us exploit the huge market potential for intelligent PSU technology, which is much in demand for remote applications in the utilities sector.

As a relatively small operation, we have the flexibility needed to respond quickly to both market opportunities and customers' changing requirements".

VxI Power was initially set up to support customers whose deliveries had been abruptly halted by Bulgin's demise, and now the company is actively seeking to expand its customer base.

Its standard range of 12 and 24V AC/DC switch-mode PSUs includes both low-cost versions for volume applications and feature-rich high-end models offering output powers up to 2400W.

VxI also has the necessary in-house expertise and experience for designing and manufacturing custom power supplies to meet individual requirements.

All product development and small-batch manufacturing will be carried out at the Lincoln site, with high-volume production being handled by VxI's CEM partners.

According to Tim McCann, VxI may also take on some small-batch contract manufacturing work itself: "Our workforce is very experienced in electronics manufacturing", he said, "and we would certainly consider small-batch projects that aren't really of interest to the major CEMs".

Fully equipped with automatic SMT placement machines, functional test systems, and transformer winding and encapsulation facilities, the VxI factory operates using BS EN ISO9001 processes, and the company is aiming to achieve BS EN ISO9001:2000 certification by the end of 2003.
