But whereas some tasks call for shadow-free light from all sides, other types of work can best be carried out if there is a clear shadow to highlight edges and surface features.

In the past it has generally been necessary to use separate magnifiers for each of these requirements, but Waldmann Lighting's SNL 319 combines both lighting modes in the same unit.

The SNL 319 has a large, square, high-quality lens giving a clear view of the working area and incorporates three powerful energy-saving fluorescent lamps arranged in a U shape around the lens.

With three lamps on, the magnifier illuminates the work from all angles with no shadows, and by switching to the two-lamp mode it is immediately thrown into contrast.

The ability to reduce the overall light level by switching off one of the tubes can also reduce operator fatigue over the course of the working day, and it also allows the light to be adjusted to suit individual preferences.

The SNL 319's low distortion lens can pivot independently of the magnifier head and the magnifier itself is mounted on a 3D ball joint attached to a spring-balanced arm.

This means that the illuminated area and field of view can be easily and quickly adjusted, with no movement of the head once it is placed in the desired position.

Special plastics are used to achieve this and the magnifier glass itself is protected with an ESD compliant coating.

This ensures that there is no possibility of damage to susceptible electronic components or circuits.
