Chip resistors take more power

The PWC Series of thick-film chip resistors is now available with power handling capabilities up to 1.5W with no heatsink required.

As the power density of designs in the power conversion and control fields continues to rise, thermal performance becomes an important criterion in component selection And although this is generally recognised for semiconductors, it applies equally to passive components

Conventional thick-film chip resistors provide power ratings up to 1W in a 2512 footprint.

To go beyond this requires either a wire-wound part with high cost and high inductance, or a multiple chip resistor solution with higher placement cost and waste of valuable board space.

J Graham, Marketing and Sales Director at Welwyn Components says: "Our focus at TT Electronics Welwyn Components is to provide resistor technology solutions.

The breakthrough with the PWC power performance is a result of working with customers to solve their application needs".

The 50% increase in power is achieved by the careful choice of materials and adjustment method so as to avoid current crowding and associated hot spots within the resistor.

No special requirements are placed on the board to provide heatsinking through extra wide tracks.

The PWC Series is available in four sizes: 0805, 1206, 2010 and 2512.

The respective power ratings at 70C are 0.125, 0.33, 0.75 and 1.5W.

The larger sizes also offer double the working voltage of conventional chip resistors, the limiting element voltage being 400V for PWC2010, and 500V for PWC2512.
