This new demographic of telematics customers signals a market shift whereby more drivers will soon be "connected" while in their cars.
"Our development team was impressed by the integration of Wind River's software, development tools, extensive networking protocols and graphics capabilities for telematics development, resulting in a quicker development cycle to get Carwings to market", said Naito Masafumi, Manager, OS Middle Software Design Group Development Centre, Product Research and Development Division, Xanavi Informatics Corp.
"Wind River's superb track record in various market categories, its extensive technological expertise in the integration of embedded systems, and its powerful support capabilities also prompted our decision to use Wind River technology for Carwings".
Carwings provides a comprehensive solution for users' telematics needs with innovative features, such as a steering switch that can be manoeuvred while driving, a voice command system for hands-free calling, voice guides, e-mail access, and display of the vehicle's position using GPS.
It also provides Drive Route Assist (DRA) service as well as an automatic DJ service, and a wide range of information displayed interactively on a 4.2in LCD screen.
The terminal takes advantage of the reliability, stability, and innovative technologies provided by Wind River's VxWorks and Tornado technologies to make state-of-the-art telematics services available to car owners.
"Carwings represents a significant step forward in bringing innovative car infotainment and telematics-enabled features and services to the average driver", said Scot Morrison, Vice President and General Manager, Wind River Automotive and Industrial business unit.

Carwings is offered as a manufacturer's option and sells for around $380 (Yen 49,000).
