Wind River Systems is extending its automotive-specific integrated embedded platform to support additional architectures including MIPS, XScale, ARM and PowerPC.

Wind River Platform for Car Infotainment (Platform CI) enables original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 automotive suppliers to build car infotainment and telematics devices with improved efficiencies, thus accelerating time to market.

Specifically, Platform CI now offers better support for the specialised automotive processors and reference boards that an increasing amount of automotive customers are demanding from semiconductor providers.

In addition to expanding Platform CI to include these additional architectures, Wind River also supports the vast majority of automotive-specific hardware used in embedded development, including Renesas' SH7760 Biscayne board and SH7751R BigSur/Amanda board, and Motorola's MPC5200 based 5200Lite board.

The expanded architecture support enables OEMs and Tier 1 automotive suppliers to more easily standardise embedded development across product lines.

By standardising on Platform CI, these OEMs and suppliers are able to devote valuable time and resources to developing competitive differentiators and core strengths instead of exhausting those same resources on piecing together foundational technologies.

Wind River's annual subscription licensing model also ensures that throughout the standardisation process, customers will continually benefit from new innovations and increasing support from Wind River.

"Given the rapidly increasing amount of silicon in cars today, semiconductor manufacturers are producing more and more automotive-specific hardware, and technologies such as Wind River's Platform CI are enabling developers to produce reliable car infotainment and telematics devices quickly and cost effectively", said Marc Serughetti, Director of Marketing for Automotive, Industrial, Aerospace and Defence at Wind River.

"The expansion of Platform CI support reinforces Wind River's unyielding commitment to delivering highly reliable Platform support to the automotive market".

Platform CI integrates the necessary foundation software to quickly design, develop and deploy such devices.

Based on the proven reliable VxWorks real-time operating system and powerful development tools, Platform CI supports a variety of in car network protocols like CAN and MOST, as well as wireless network protocols like 802.11 and PPP.

Platform CI now supports MIPS, XScale, ARM, PowerPC and SuperH processors.

With Platform CI, customers' development focus can shift from integration to innovation.
