Wind River plans to support the PowerPC 970FX in its Wind River Platforms that run VxWorks 6.X, the next generation of Wind River's industry leading real time operating system, which includes new features that complement the PowerPC 970FX such as MMU-based memory protection, open standards and advanced error detection.
Other Wind River products that will support the IBM PowerPC 970FX include the VxWorks Developer's Toolkit and the Wind River Workbench.
"Wind River and IBM deliver technology that spans from devices to enterprise systems, which enables us to collaborate to provide device software optimisation solutions to our customers", said Steve Harris, Regional Director, Wind River North West Region.
"The PowerPC970FX processor coupled with Wind River's market-leading technology eliminates the need for customers to spend time on hardware and software integration, allowing them to focus on building better, more reliable products at a lower cost".
IBM has been instrumental in Wind River's embrace of Linux and Wind River also plans to incorporate the PowerPC 970FX into its ongoing Linux strategy.
Additionally, through Wind River's recently announced partnership with Red Hat, IBM and Wind River customers will have device software solutions that span from the device to the enterprise.
"The new PowerPC 970FX processor joins other PowerPC processors to comprise IBM's next generation scalable microprocessor family that runs applications that span from devices to supercomputers", said Ray Bryant, Director of PowerPC Products, IBM Systems and Technology Group.
"Through Wind River's software and tools support, developers can work with a well-rounded device software development platform that can help speed time to market and reduce development costs".
