Samsung standardises consumer device development
Samsung Electronics' Digital Media Business has selected Wind River's Platform for Consumer Devices as the major device software platform for future product development.
Samsung Electronics' Digital Media Business has selected Wind River's Platform for Consumer Devices as the major device software platform for future product development.
Samsung also is an early adopter of Wind River's new production license free enterprise licence business model, enabling it to easily leverage the class-leading technologies within Wind River's platform to develop a wide range of digital consumer electronics.
Samsung Electronics' Digital Media (DM) business develops a wide array of digital consumer electronics, including digital televisions, digital set top boxes, DVD players and recorders, digital home audio players, and home and office printers.
Selecting a reliable and scalable embedded foundation and software development tools for such a wide range of products is a complex technical and business challenge.
After significant evaluation of many options, Samsung DM chose Wind River's Platform for Consumer Devices as the foundation for digital consumer electronics devices.
Kil Su Eo, Vice President at Samsung Electronics, Digital Media Business said: "Wind River's Platform for Consumer Devices provides us with a reliable and modular base from which we can develop a complete range of devices from resource constrained portable digital audio MP3 players to feature-rich digital televisions.
We are very pleased to work with the leader in device software optimisation, and plan to continue to leverage Wind River products.
" Samsung also evaluated key business criteria, and found Wind River's new production licence free business model complementary to its needs.
The enterprise-licensing model will enable the Digital Media Business to add new product lines quickly using Wind River's Platforms with no additional cost in a product's bill of materials.
This agreement builds on and cements a long-standing history of successful product deployment between the two companies.
Products from Samsung Digital Media Business with Wind River's device software include a wide array of DVD players and recorders, digital set top boxes, digital televisions, digital Imaging printers and digital video on demand recorders.
"Wind River is enabling a connected home, where consumers can easily and reliably share data, video and audio throughout the house.
By providing a reliable and scalable development platform, Wind River allows Samsung to continue to bring innovative products to market quickly", said Sayeed Choudhury, Director of Business Development for Wind River's Digital Consumer Group.
"We are also pleased to announce that Samsung is the first leading consumer electronics manufacturer to leverage Wind River's new production licence free business model, thereby optimising the software within each product".
