RTOS is platform for software-defined
radio
With Wind River VxWorks 6.2, developers can build SCA-conformant software defined radios for use in JTRS and other implementations.
Meeting the rigorous standards originally set out by the US Defense Department for Software Communication Architecture (SCA) in communication devices such as Joint Tactical Radio Systems (JTRS) has just got easier with the latest version of the real-time operating system available from Wind River VxWorks 6.2 provides an operating environment for SCA and is already allowing device manufacturers to reduce development costs for the new breed of software defined radio (SDR)

RTOS supports W-Fi chipset
Wind River has announced the availability of wireless LAN technology for the VxWorks real-time operating system and Tornado for Home Gateways platform.
This development platform will help drive the shift from traditional hardware-centric, proprietary radios to software-controlled, reprogrammable, standards-based radios that offer maximum interoperability and upgradeability.
With Wind River VxWorks 6.2, developers can build SCA-conformant software defined radios for use in JTRS and other implementations.
These new radios can be quickly reconfigured to switch among different frequencies or channels (waveforms), and support the full range of communications through voice, data and video.

Wind River aids NASA Mars Odyssey mission
Wind River has played a critical role in helping NASA take another step towards interplanetary space exploration with its contribution to the Mars Odyssey mission.
"The ongoing JTRS project is just one of the next generation communication systems crucial for enabling the interoperability that today's and tomorrow's joint force operations will rely on for seamless communication and collaboration".
"The technology will also be crucial for cutting down costs out of government, police and defence communications budgets as improved versatility for COTS technology drives economies of scale for these organisations", comments Alex Wilson, Wind River Senior Programme Manager for Aerospace and Defence.
"Wind River's VxWorks platform will enable manufacturers building the full range of SCA devices to focus on adding functionality and improving proprietary features rather than developing one-off solutions for hardware and switching interfaces to comply with the rigorous standard".
"This will mean drastic cuts in time to market and costs for more reliable devices".
The focus on delivering an extended range of tools and support to developers, manufacturers and integrators of SCA devices led Wind River to form partnerships with Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC) as well as Objective Interface Systems.
This allowed the addition to CRC's SCARI Software Suite and Component Development Library and Objective Interface Systems' ORBexpress, a real-time object request broker ORB from Objective Interface Systems, as the communications backbone.
These components are fully compliant to the latest SCA requirements while providing industry-leading versatility to device software developers creating SDRs.
"This partnership is an important step in further establishing CRC's reputation as a world leader in Software Defined Radio technology", said Claude Belisle, acting Vice President of Satellite Communications and Radio Propagation Research at CRC.
"The integration of CRC's SCARI Software Suite with the recent release of VxWorks 6.2 allows us to offer additional options to SCA developers".
"We look forward to working with Wind River to ensure successful development of software defined radio applications".
"As the leader in real-time, embedded and high-performance communications middleware, Objective Interface has a long history of supporting Wind River's entire range of products".
"We are pleased to come together with Wind River in support of this software defined radio operating environment", said Joseph Jacob, Senior Vice President, Objective Interface Systems.
"Wind River's market-leading VxWorks real-time operating system, coupled with the maturity of ORBexpress from Objective Interface, creates a solid, secure and high-performance foundation on which the SCA Core Framework can be applied".
