Kontron adopts Carrier-Grade Linux

A Wind River Systems product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Oct 17, 2006

Kontron has joined Wind River's partner programme and will bundle Carrier-Grade Linux with its next generation of ATCA, MicroTCA and Advanced Mezzanine Card platforms.

Kontron, one of the world's largest suppliers of embedded computer technology, has joined Wind River's partner programme as a strategic partner and will bundle Wind River's Carrier-Grade Linux with its next generation of ATCA, MicroTCA and Advanced Mezzanine Card (AMC) platforms.

The integrated Wind River and Kontron solutions create a complete COTS-based platform built on highly available, standards-based platforms for ATCA.

Using COTS hardware and software enables application developers to simplify the overall product development effort and speed time to market of next-generation telecommunications equipment solutions.

"We are pleased to become one of Wind River's strategic partners for Linux-based platforms", said Tom Meyer, Director, Kontron Communications Division.

"Wind River is a pre-eminent supplier of real-time operating systems and has taken the lead in offering an integrated development and run-time environment for Carrier-Grade Linux".

"Integrating Wind River Linux into our next-generation platforms will enable us to offer customers the future-proof, stable and true carrier-grade system solution that only Wind River can help us provide".

Based on the Carrier Grade Linux specification from Open Source Development Labs, Wind River Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition, supports many of the industry's most popular telecommunications boards, making it an ideal fit for the telecommunications and high-end data networking markets.

Platform for Network Equipment is a fully standards-based platform with support for key APIs such as the Hardware Platform Interface (HPI) specification from Service Availability Forum and the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI).

The result is a fully integrated and optimised support for the PICMG 3.x ATCA.

Platform for Network Equipment includes a standards-based interprocess communication (IPC) mechanism that connects the Linux and VxWorks editions of the platform.

This capability is an especially viable configuration for many ATCA solutions that require both a true RTOS for data-plane communications and a Linux based solution for management and control.

Only Wind River can offer a complete supported solution from a single vendor for all software required on ATCA platforms.

This tested and validated Linux platform is supported and maintained by Wind River.

"We are very pleased to add Kontron as a strategic partner", said Glenn Seiler, Director of Product Management for Wind River's Linux Platforms.

"Kontron has become a major supplier of telecommunications equipment and both Kontron and Wind River are committed to driving standards for a COTS environment for telecom".

"We look forward to working together to provide our joint customers with fully integrated, standards-based DSO solutions that are cost effective and easily support a wide range of development environments".

Wind River Linux is currently available on Kontron's AT8001 ATCA processor board, AM4001 AMC module and AT8020 ATCA processor board.
