Mobile tester checks automotive installations

A Willtek Communications product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Apr 14, 2005

The 4208 off-air mobile tester is the latest addition to the successful 4200 series of service testers from Willtek Communications.

The 4208 off-air mobile tester is the latest addition to the successful 4200 series of service testers from Willtek Communications.

The new instrument supports mobile phone tests over the antenna, for example for verifying the installation of mobile phones in cars and trucks in vehicle production lines.

The new 4208 will be available from May 2005.

First car manufacturers already have the 4208 in use for automated installation tests of vehicle-mount mobile phones.

These tests help to quickly verify the radio and audio connections in an end-to-end test, preventing customer dissatisfaction and high repair cost when the car infotainment system installation does not match the desired quality.

Cyrille Damany, CEO of Willtek Communications says: "Willtek is a leading provider of test equipment for mobile phone production and service".

"But there are many more testing problems that can be solved with our RF technology".

"The 9100 handheld spectrum analyser series and now the 4208 off-air mobile tester are examples of how Willtek can support various industries in fulfilling their testing needs".

The 4208 comes with a significantly higher receiver sensitivity of -54dBm and an increased output level of -24dBm compared with the standard 4200 instruments.

These two features support measurements over the antenna rather than over a cable.

compared with the standard 4200 Series instruments, the call processing functions have been improved for tests under interference conditions.

By introducing separate connectors for the receive and transmit paths, an external amplifier can be connected to the 4208 to further increase the operating range.

The user must, however, take measures to conform to national radiation limits and to avoid interference with local cellular networks.

In order to avoid other mobile phones in the vicinity to lock on the 4208 signal, the user can restrict the allowable phone numbers to a definable range so that other phones will be rejected.

The 4208 off-air mobile tester can perform a power measurement while the phone is registering with it.

This can be used to automatically test the antenna installation without manual intervention because the user does not even need to set up a call for this check.
