Board embeds four high-speed USB ports

A Winsystems product story

The PPM-USB2 is a high-speed four-port PC/104-Plus Universal Serial Bus 2.0-compliant (USB2.0) module.

The PPM-USB2 is a high-speed four-port PC/104-Plus Universal Serial Bus 2.0-compliant (USB2.0) module.

This addon module is 40 times faster than USB 1.x implementations and supports signalling up to 480Mbit/s.

The board targets industrial applications that require a variety of USB-compatible peripheral devices.

It supports 1.5Mbit/s low-speed (LS), 12Mbit/s full-speed (FS), and high-speed (HS) 480Mbit/s categories on any port on the board.

With the HS capability, new applications are open for high-speed network peripherals such as storage, imaging, video and communication devices.

The PPM-USB2 module uses the NEC uPD720101 USB2.0 host controller.

It complies with the Universal Serial Bus specification revision 2.0 and Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) specification for full-/low-speed signalling and Intel's Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI) specification for high-speed signalling.

The controller also provides a direct Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) to the PC/104-Plus bus.

The unique quality of the controller is that its architecture is optimised to deliver both high-performance and PCIbus efficiency with the lowest power and smallest size.

There are two OHCI controller cores for full-/low-speed signalling and one EHCI host controller for high-speed signalling.

A root hub with four downstream facing ports is shared by the OHCI and EHCI controller cores.

All downstream facing ports can handle high-speed, full-speed and low-speed transactions.

This means that different speed USB devices can be connected without speed or performance compromises on any channel.

The PPM-USB2 supports hot insertion and removal of the USB cables.

A smooth turn on feature eliminates inrush current induced voltage drops during hot-plug events.

Also, all ports have overcurrent protection provided by two National Semiconductor LM3526 dual power switches.

During a short-circuit/overcurrent event, the switch dissipating excessive heat is turned off, allowing the second switch to continue to function uninterrupted.

A fault on one channel will not affect the other nor will it disrupt power supplied to other PC/104 boards in a stack.

No fuses need to be replaced as protection is done electronically.

Each of the ports has a USB 2.0 Type A connector for easy connection and installation.

The PPM-USB2 is designed to support either +5/3.3V tolerant or +3.3V only PC/104-Plus signalling.

A jumper block selects the voltage range.

The board draws 250mA (typical) at +5V and will operate from -40 to +85C for harsh COTS environments.

List price for the PPM-USB2 is $149 and delivery is stock to 3 weeks.
