Wolfson Microelectronics has introduced a family of high-level integrated analogue front ends.

Wolfson Microelectronics has introduced a family of high-level integrated analogue front ends (AFEs) Dubbed the WM819x, this new device family supports speed and image quality enhancements allowing sample speeds up to 12Msample/s

At the same time, the WM819x family is highly integrated, combining both analogue preprocessing and analogue-to-digital conversion on a single pin-compatible chip package maintaining a low cost and easing migration to this next generation device.

"The explosive growth of the Internet drives demand and growth in the digital imaging market and generating demand for better, easier to use devices", said David Milne, president and CEO of Wolfson Microelectronics.

"At Wolfson, we are focused on supplying a full range of products which meet the needs of both the consumer and professional market segments".

The WM819x family operates at 14 or 16bit resolution at speeds of 6 or 12Msample/s.

All WM819x parts have three analogue inputs with individual analogue preprocessing sections for colour depths of up to 48bit/pixel.

Alternatively, a single analogue channel can operate at higher speed to take full advantage of the ADC conversion speed in monochrome mode.

Additionally, these devices allow users to take advantage of the higher throughput rates of new interface standards such at USB2 and IEEE 1394.

System upgrades and design re-use become straightforward with the WM819x and is pin and package compatible with existing products, requiring only minimal software changes.

The Wolfson WM819x family provides a complete solution for interfacing to CCD sensors in a wide variety of high-performance imaging applications including X-ray scanners and multifunction office equipment.
