Stereo DAC supports Direct Stream Digital
Wolfson Microelectronics has unveiled its first stereo DAC with support for the Direct Stream Digital (DSD) audio data format.
"The platform approach speeds up the overall design process, said David Milne, Wolfson's CEO and Managing Director.
"With the WM8738 we offer complete audio sound subsystems for most consumer applications.
It is designed to digitise all analogue audio sources such as CD, FM radio and DVD to the standards necessary for uncompromised quality".
The WM8738 is the highest performance stereo audio ADC at this price point.
It offers a signal/noise ratio (101dB A weighted at 48kHz) and -90dB THD (total harmonic distortion) making it suitable for all current and emerging recordable media applications.
Stereo line-level audio inputs are provided, along with a control input pin to allow operation of the audio interface in either one of two industry standard modes (I2S or left justified).
The device also has a selectable digital highpass filter to remove residual DC offsets.
The WM8738 supports 24bit digital audio output word lengths and sampling rates from 8 to 96kHz and operates at 3.0-5.5V analogue supply and 3.0-3.6V digital supply.
The WM8738 is sampling now.
Production will ramp up in May.
Complete reference design documentation and evaluation boards are available to order.
