Stereo DAC supports Direct Stream Digital
Wolfson Microelectronics has unveiled its first stereo DAC with support for the Direct Stream Digital (DSD) audio data format.
The R-K801-N CD receiver is a member of Kenwood's K series acoustic sound system under the premium Sound Meister Edition brand, which combines high audio quality with compact dimensions and contemporary styling.
For the CD receiver, Kenwood considered a number of alternative stereo DACs, but found the WM8740 to offer the most elegant and highest performing solution.
"Our target customers for the K series place a premium on quality and style".
"Therefore, achieving the best possible solution, in terms of delivering the highest audio quality and functional richness, is vital".
"The Wolfson WM8740 totally supports these objectives, and was by far the best solution our engineers considered", said Mitsuo Hagiwara, Kenwood's Chief Executive (Sound Meister).
"Wolfson conceived the WM8740 for professional applications and high-end home equipment, including pure audio and AV systems such as home theatre", commented Julian Hayes, VP of Marketing at Wolfson.
"The WM8740 audio architecture was specifically designed to provide outstanding audio quality, a passion that we share with many of our customers such as Kenwood".
"The unique low order modulator and multibit DAC architecture results in class leading low out-of-band noise and excellent low level linearity".
"With digital input word lengths up to 24bit, as well as 192kHz sample rates, the WM8740 supports high resolution audio applications".
The WM8740 from Wolfson features a linear phase half band FIR filter, but also has the flexibility to interface to external digital filter solutions.
This allows OEMs to further differentiate end user products by selecting the optimal digital filter to meet market-driven performance and price targets.
In addition, digitally controllable mute and attenuator functions are provided on each channel, all encapsulated in a small 28-pin SSOP package.
