Radio link is part of automated weather station
A Wood and Douglas radio link forms part of a recently commissioned automatic weather station on the Bramble Pile in the middle of the Solent to help vessels navigate the narrow channels.
Wood and Douglas, a Hampshire-based radio expert, has supplied the latest in a series of its wireless radio links to Associated British Ports.
The radio link forms part of a recently commissioned automatic weather station on the Bramble Pile in the middle of the Solent to help vessels navigate the narrow channels and provide almost real-time weather information that can be accessed via the Web or WAP enabled mobile phones.
The radio data system regularly polls sensors and collects key data to monitor sea and air conditions including accurate visibility measurements.
The near real time data is then processed by the control room of the Associated British Ports in Southampton.
The Web site is already averaging between 6 and 7,000 hits each week from a wide range of users.
The weather and tide information gathered well away from land structures is extremely accurate making it invaluable for the many classes of ships and yachts that navigate in and out of the Port of Southampton.
The combination of modern information delivery methods through the web site, sophisticated sensors from Campbell Scientific, and above all a strategic location, has produced an innovative way to help the professional users and sailors of the Solent.
