Module drops in for simple ISM-band radio

A Xemics product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team May 19, 2005

The DP1205 is a "drop-in" module operating in the unlicensed 433, 868 and 915MHz bands.

Available now from Xemics, the DP1205 is a "drop-in" module operating in the unlicensed 433, 868 and 915MHz bands.

The DP1205 module is based on the XE1205 transceiver and offers a simple, cost-effective way to make any wired application wireless.

Using the module is as simple as connecting it to an SPIbus-enabled microcontroller and adding an antenna.

The module is fully tested and ETSI/FCC precertified and can operate out of the box with simple configuration.

Although the module is very simple to use, it still offers exceptional performance and flexibility.

With a 128dB link budget (4.8Kbit/s, 0.1% BER), a pair of modules can communicate over distances in excess of several hundred metres.

Some customers have reported in excess of several kilometres line-of-sight.

Other key specifications are 15dBm transmit power, 152.34Kbit/s maximum RF datarate, 14mA receive and 45mA transmit typical current consumption.

Rob Whittaker, Xemics' Business Unit Manager ISM wireless stated: ''The DP1205 enables customers to rapidly develop and deploy high-efficiency narrowband ISM solutions".

"The DP1205 module is a high-performance choice for customers wishing to RF-enable their products".

New features in the DP1205 include a 16byte FIFO data buffer, an SPIbus data link, and an enhanced AFC algorithm, all of which contribute to reduced host-controller overhead and thereby lower system cost.

The DP1205 module fully meets the requirements for 25kHz channel spacing and adjacent channel power of less than -37dBm and is ideal for applications operating in the 433-868-915MHz band such as alarms, security, automatic metering, services and controls.

The modules are available in a surface-mount, manufacturing-friendly package that supports automated assembly and IR reflow.

The overall dimensions of the module are 18.5mm wide and 30.5mm long.

With the highest link budget in its class the Xemics TrueRF narrowband transceiver, the XE1205, has a superior range with no external LNA or PA.

compared with a similar product, the link budget is 15dB better.

The DP1205 is available from below $12.50 in volume.
