Low impedance capacitors take the heat

Specialist distributor, Young Electronics, has launched a new series of surface mount capacitors that boast low impedance and high heat capability.

Specialist distributor, Young Electronics, has launched a new series of surface mount capacitors.

The PXC series, manufactured by Nippon Chemi-Con, supercedes the company's PXA series.

Based on the same PEDT conductive polymer as the PXA series, the PXC series boasts "super low" equivalent series resistance (ESR), a resultant low impedance and high heat resistance.

Its resonant frequency at which the capacitor stops functioning is therefore greater than capacitors made from materials such as tantalum and with liquid electrolytes.

The PXA series has a rated voltage range of 2.5 16V DC, with five standard ratings available.

Its capacitance range is 27-470uF, capacitance tolerance is +/-20% and it operates across temperatures of -55 to +105C.

The capacitors are designed specifically for applications on DC/DC convertors, as voltage regulators and on decoupling applications used on computer motherboards.

The case size range is from 5 x 5.7 to 8 x 6.7mm.

The series has been tested for endurance, with the rated voltage applied at 105C for 1000 hours.

The capacitors showed a capacitance change of less than 20%, a leakage current less than the initial specified value and an ESR of less than 150% of the initial specified value.

Similar results were achieved when the capacitors were subjected to 1000 cycles, each consisting of a charge with the surge voltage specified at 105C for 30 seconds through a protective resistor and discharged for 5.5min.
