Zilog has joined the ZigBee Alliance, a global consortium of companies focused on enabling reliable, cost-effective, low-power wireless monitoring and control solutions based on an open global standard.
The goal is to provide consumers with ultimate flexibility, mobility and ease of use by building wireless intelligent sensing and control capabilities into everyday devices.
ZigBee-enabled solutions are aimed at the digital home, industrial automation, supply chain management, inventory controls, medical devices and transportation.
According to a study by ABI Research shipments of ZigBee-compliant devices are expected to skyrocket from 1 million in 2005 to over 80 million units worldwide by the end of 2006.
As a member of the alliance, Zilog will apply its extensive knowledge in home entertainment technologies to help realise the consumer dream of creating a wireless digital home.
"With demand for interoperable, reliable and low power wireless networking solutions at an all time high, it was an obvious decision for Zilog to join the ZigBee Alliance", noted Ramesh Ramchandani, Zilog's Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
"Consumer demand for ZigBee-based products will continue to accelerate, in turn requiring integration of intelligent control, wireless communication and power management technologies".
"The ZigBee Alliance is pleased to welcome Zilog as a member", said Bob Heile, Chairman, the ZigBee Alliance.
"Zilog joins the Alliance at a momentous time with the specification recently ratified, the certification testing in process and strong OEM support globally".
"We look forward to Zilog's contributions to the ongoing deployment of the ZigBee standard".
As one of the leading providers of MCU solutions designed specifically for infra-red (IR) universal remote control (URC) applications, Zilog's solutions consist of a comprehensive family of application-specific firmware, development tools and design services, along with one of the most comprehensive IR code set databases in the industry.
"It is a natural fit for Zilog to embrace the ZigBee standard", continued Ramchandani.
"Zilog is currently one of the leading providers of 8bit microcontroller solutions for the home entertainment and industrial control markets".
"We plan to further strengthen our position in these markets by bringing together our leading edge microcontrollers and the ZigBee wireless technology, in order to address the emerging requirements in these arenas and to provide our customers with innovative turnkey solutions".
