ZiLog has released the first devices in its new UltraSlim IrDA transceiver family designed to bring always-on, always power-efficient infra-red connectivity to compact portable systems.
ZigBee-enabled solutions are aimed at the digital home, industrial automation, supply chain management, inventory controls, medical devices and transportation.
According to a study by ABI Research shipments of ZigBee-compliant devices are expected to skyrocket from 1 million in 2005 to over 80 million units worldwide by the end of 2006.
As a member of the alliance, Zilog will apply its extensive knowledge in home entertainment technologies to help realise the consumer dream of creating a wireless digital home.

Net-ready processor adds infra-red control
The second product in the high-performance eZ80 MPU family is the eZ80 Webserver-i which enables cost-effective, direct connections to networks and the Internet with embedded TCP/IP and IrDA software.
"With demand for interoperable, reliable and low power wireless networking solutions at an all time high, it was an obvious decision for Zilog to join the ZigBee Alliance", noted Ramesh Ramchandani, Zilog's Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
"Consumer demand for ZigBee-based products will continue to accelerate, in turn requiring integration of intelligent control, wireless communication and power management technologies".
