3D package adds extra dimension to PCB design
Zuken has released Cadstar 3D, a novel desktop solution for combined 3D validation of electrical and mechanical designs.
The multi-year deal covers Siemens sites in Germany, the UK, France, the USA and China, and will enable the company reduce costs, improve product quality and cut the time to market significantly.
The Siemens A and D Group is well known for its high quality development and delivery of highly reliable products, systems and integrated automated solutions.
In order to meet its challenges, the Siemens A and D Group established a programme to improve and integrate its electronic design processes.

To this further improvement the Siemens A and D Group has developed an extensive E-CAD supplier harmonisation process for its future PCB development departments including a centralised library management process (CLM).
Following its business model "delivering customised engineering solutions", Zuken applies its accumulated technology and expertise to provide the Siemens A and D Group with an optimal system infrastructure for its sophisticated development and production environment and processes.
Johann Sippl Project and R and D Manager Siemens A and D Nuremberg says: "CAD/CAM systems have played a key role as a means for solving the never ending quest to raise productivity through more efficient design and manufacturing.
However, the accelerating pace of technical innovation has made design and manufacturing issues even more challenging, and they can no longer be addressed with multiple E-CAD supplier environments and packaged software".
As part of the strategic partnership, Zuken will deliver a complete front-to-back hardware-design flow, based on its CR-5000 enterprise-wide PCB design solution.
It will also include Zuken's Hot-Stage high-speed virtual prototyping tool and the DS-1 Centralised Library Management Process (CLM).
The latter will enable Siemens A and D to maintain its component library from anywhere in the world.
When fully implemented, the new solution will replace the current hardware-design environment based on tools from a wide range of vendors.
Zuken will deliver one integrated system designed to greatly enhance productivity and efficiency.
It will eliminate duplication of effort, avoid data loss during conversion between tools, and reduce costs of multi-vendor maintenance agreements.
It will also provide tight integration between design and product lifecycle management (PLM) systems.
Juergen Barfuss, responsible for Global Commodity Management IT and Software at Siemens Automation and Drives, says: "Zuken's expertise in integrating design tools as a unified system enables us to apply technology and innovation that will improve our flexibility.
Now we will be able to further improve the speed and efficiency of our design using one system, connecting multiple sites and design teams".
Gerhard Lipski, Chief Operations Officer Zuken Europe, added: "Zuken has long recognised the increasing demand for customised engineering solutions optimised to customers' individual needs.
We have adapted our own organisation, business model and solutions accordingly.
The strategic contract with Siemens A and D Group gives Zuken the feedback that we're heading in the right direction to add maximum value to our customers' business processes.
Zuken will provide a unified development environment with close collaboration and tight integration into Siemens A and D's value chain, ensuring effective inter-company design and manufacturing processes". Request free introductory details about products from Zuken ...
