Touchscreens put motorists in charge of
fuel

Zytronic delivers Zytouch touchscreen technology for Tokheim's European rollout of forecourt self-payment systems.

Zytronic is supplying its Zytouch touchscreen technology to fuel dispensing equipment giant, Tokheim, for its customer direct Pay@ Pump terminals The Optimum iQ range of terminals allow motorists to interact directly with the 6.4in Zytouch unit

Customers can transact their own debit and credit card payments, and fuel cardholders can use the terminal to enter their vehicle registration and mileage, to complete their card payment transaction.

Tokheim targeted a touchscreen implementation to maximise user-friendliness and flexibility, and chose Zytouch over alternative technologies for its high resistance to environmental conditions such as extreme temperature variations, accidental or malicious damage, and to surface degradation caused by chemicals, for example.

The superior optical clarity that Zytouch offers ensures that the screen may still be read even in sunlight.

Zytouch uses a unique projected capacitive sensing technology, which has the active component of the sensor encapsulated within a multilaminar matrix.

Zytronic designed a version of Zytouch with toughened glass for Tokheim, which has the same optical index as plate glass, enabling extreme durability and clarity.

Zytronic made further enhancements including the application of anti-glare coating, for maximum effect at a cost-effective price.

The antiglare coating technology employed by Zytronic is not available with other resistive and capacitive technologies where the sensing element is overlaid on the screen.

Zytouch-based touchscreens are also brighter, with higher sensitivity, and offer accurate sensing even when the operator is wearing gloves.

Following field issues and subsequently, further touch technology evaluation, Tokheim decided to use projected capacitive - Zytouch - touch sensors instead of resistive touchscreen alternatives.

From September 2003, 250 Zytouch-based forecourt terminals were piloted in fuel stations in Luxemburg by Esso and Shell.

The success of the terminals has lead to another 800 being installed in Belgium and 100 in The Netherlands, and more recently, Esso and Shell installed another 800 across France.

Approximately 2000 terminals are currently in use at stations across Europe and this number will increase to 4000 by the end of 2005.
